'From farm to needles with authenticity and our own unique story' is how the Hole Family describe their yarn. Isle Yarns produce knitting & crochet wool from their family farm on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, in small batches and in a palette of colors to reflect the stunning Purbeck landscape.
The "Isle Yarn Purbeck Kit" includes the following:
6, 50g balls of Isle Yarn DK in the Mizzens or Stonehips color way, a beautiful and professionally printed pattern of the shawl pattern ~ Tales from the Isle of Purbeck by Annie Claire ~ and a canvas American-made tote bag from The Woolly Thistle of a good size to house this beautiful project.

Dorset sheep have a 'downs' type of wool, known for its density and springiness. Isle Yarns use their Dorset X Swaledale X Bluefaced Leicester flock to add softness but still hold the rustic nature of the wool.
Finished items will show excellent stitch definition and will be very warm and rustic. The wool takes dye clearly. It is stretchy so blocking will allow for slight size adjustments. All the colours are named after fields on the farm.
Annie Claire is a prolific knitwear designer that designed the Tales from the Isle of Purbeck
shawl specifically for Hole & Sons* when it first came out. She says:
Originally from England, but finding my home in Northern California, I’m a dairy goat farmer obsessed with domestic wool, herbs, and natural dyes, who often wonders if you can make cheese from wool and knit with milk.
Hole and Sons Pure Wool is the inspiration behind this design - a unique DK single source yarn coming from the Isle of Purbeck, England. As a Brit and farmer myself, I have quite a soft spot for their small batch yarn. Hole and Sons Pure Wool is so purposefully and carefully created - from field, to mill, to your needles - that I wanted to create a design that reflects the yarn’s integrity. In addition, I am always conscious to design something that is worn easily and comfortably, suiting many outfits and different occasions. You will work on a project that is delicate yet not fragile, special but universal. This yarn wants to be worn, loved and used for many years. It’s crisp handle and rustic nature begs to be put to work, and I can see it will only get better with age.
This big beautiful lace shawl will knit up quickly in Isle Yarn DK weight yarn and provide you with a fun and interesting knit as well as a finished object that you can dress up or down, and wear proudly. This yarn is strong, round and truly a single farm yarn experience. Sue, Annie Claire and I hope you will enjoy your own Tales from the Isle of Purbeck!
** Hole & Sons yarn was an exceptionally popular yarn available in limited quantities. The yarn was produced by Benjamin Hole, Sue Hole's nephew, and was created from the same flocks on the Hole Family farm. The Woolly Thistle was lucky enough to receive the very last of the H&S stock and it was sold as a kit, with the Tales from the Isle of Purbeck pattern which was especially designed for the yarn. Annie Claire agrees that Isle Yarn DK will be the perfect substitute for the original H&S yarn called for in the pattern.
Please remember that every effort is taken to represent the true colors of the yarn and that monitor settings will vary.
